About me

I'm Thomas Burkhart. I started building software more than 30 years ago, and I've been building Flutter apps for 8 years. I wrote get_it, one of the most used Flutter packages, and it grew into the flutter_it family with watch_it, command_it and listen_it. I speak at conferences like Flutter LATAM.

For the last three years I was the lead developer responsible for the WatchCrunch app, which they brought me in to rebuild after its codebase had become hard to maintain. Since September 2025 I build exclusively with Claude Code, and I build and run my own apps, from an AI coach to a creator marketplace.

Today I live between Germany and Colombia, or wherever else the sun is shining. I help teams build apps with AI: choosing the right models, building features that hold up in production, and testing them properly. You can hire me as a consultant or as a developer on your team.

Why escamoteur?

After 15 years in international IT, I took parental leave for my daughter, and during that time I made the step to become a professional magician. I performed as Tom Bennett for about four years. It gave me a lot of experience in communicating with very different people. That is also where my handle comes from: an escamoteur is a sleight-of-hand artist, someone who makes things disappear.

I returned to IT because of an app idea. It was the reason I learned Flutter, and then clients kept me busy.

I talked about that time in I Was A Magician, the first episode of Life of Dev.
